Monkeys and Jungles

Dear Editor,

H&M's "Coolest Monkey in the Jungle" advert (Press Association report 8th. Jan 2018) was certainly inappropriate and negligent. But I would reserve the word "disgusting" for other issues. For example, I wonder how many cents were paid to the workers who actually manufactured that hoodie-top? Probably just a tiny fraction of the final sales price. And how much jungle really is left for monkeys to be "cool" in? Rain-forest is being cut down at an alarming rate in order to supply us with palm-oil for our candy-bars and animal-feed for industrial meat production.

Consumers (of all skin-colours!) are busily engaged in the developed world's "Retail frenzy" (e.g. Christmas and Black-Friday), happily oblivious of the true environmental and social consequences. So maybe we should reserve our "disgust" for issues which are more important to the planet and to those people working in situations of virtual wage-slavery in order to supply us with cheap "stuff"!

Regards
Alan
