So the world is on track to lose two-thirds of its wild animals by 2020. (Report by Damian Carrington, 27th October) And we hear this news on the same day that CETA is "at last" given the green light by the Walloons who have been cattle-prodded through the European Commission's "farm-gate" just in the nick of time.
How crazy is this: CETA will make it illegal (on pain of fines from independent tribunals!) for Europe to block goods from Canada. This means that Canadian tarsand-oil and wood-pellets (from previously pristine forests) will be given clear-passage to our markets. With loss of habitat being a major factor in species-decline, this is one of the most macabre ironies that I have ever experienced.
And, in the near future, will this "green light" to trade with Canada also include European oil companies gaining licences to take part in the decimation of Arctic wildernesses in order to get their (our!) hands on the black gold which lies below the steadily-melting ice? I'm convinced it will!
At this point I think I am ashamed to be a human-being.
