Annalena Baerbock

### Reader’s Letter to The Guardian, 21st March 2025 ###

Dear Editor,

As the world descends into craziness with Donald Trump quick-firing his executive orders and his opponents (both in the US and in Europe) slamming his every move, it feels like there is not just one bull in the global china-shop but rather a whole herd with them. All bellowing as loudly as they can!

I have been looking for signs to clarify the rhetoric and to tell me in exactly which direction things are going so felt a cold chill run down my back when it was announced that Annalena Baerbock (current German foreign minister) is on her way to become president of the UN General Assembly.

Regardless of how competent she is, she has been a vehement supporter of Ukraine and so will provide a “red rag” to the Russians. This appointment does not bode well for deescalation and peace: It will split the UN and will undermine its credibility. Exactly at a time when we need that body most.

This reminds me of other massively inappropriate appointments such as Tony Blair, a main contributor to the Iraq War, becoming “Peace Envoy” to the Middle East and Jean-Claude Juncker, architect of Luxembourg’s “tax-avoidance bazaar”, becoming president of the European Union.

Don’t we realise that we are playing with fire?

Yours,
Alan Mitcham
