### Reader’s Letter to The Guardian, 18th November 2024 ###

Dear Editor,

I read Pjotr Sauer and Dan Sabbagh’s article on the approval by Joe Biden for strikes deep within Russia using US ATACMS-missiles (The Guardian, 18th November 2024, link below) and find this very disturbing.

The article outlines the political, diplomatic and military implications very well but one other point is now rattling around my brain …

Last week Biden and Trump met, all smiles and hand-shakes, to agree a smooth transition, something which is especially important following the “Storming of the Capitol” back in January 2020.

So what do we have here: Regardless of what you think of him, the majority of Americans voted for Donald Trump to be president. A central plank of his campaign was that he would end the war in Ukraine “in one day”. Undoubtedly wishful thinking but an indication that his emphasis would be on diplomacy.

But now President Biden is actively going against the mandate that Donald Trump received by cranking up with war during the final weeks of his office.

I am no fan of Trump but to me Biden’s fixation on “creating a legacy” (in Ukraine and elsewhere?) is even worst (and potentially far more bloody!) than the Storming of the Capitol.

My faith in American democracy (both Republican and Democrat) is currently draining down the gutter.

Yours,
Alan Mitcham
